De CNWS-reeks heeft een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan de Area Studies. De reeks wordt gekenmerkt door een multidisciplinaire benadering van veelsoortige bronnen in hun oorspronkelijke talen, vanuit wetenschapsgebieden zoals antropologie, archeologie, filologie, filosofie, geschiedenis, kunstgeschiedenis, literatuurwetenschap, politicologie, sociologie, rechtsgeleerdheid en taalkunde. CNWS was de voormalige naam van de Leiden University Research School of Asian, African, and Amerindian Studies; een aantal van zijn taken zijn overgenomen door het in 2009 opgerichte Leiden University Institute of Area Studies (LIAS). LIAS blijft welbewust inzetten op multidisciplinariteit en grondige kennis van de betrokken brontalen, vraagt aandacht voor de situatedness van alle theorie en methode, en benadert de betrokken regio’s – nu vooral Azië en het Midden-Oosten –niet slechts als bronnen van data, maar evenzeer om wat ze te bieden hebben voor de ontwikkeling van die theorie en methode.

De CNWS serie bestaat uit circa 50 titels. Leiden University Press zal deze auteurs vertegenwoordigen bij toekomstige boeken. Zie verder: www.cnwspublications.com.
