Leiden University Press (LUP) and the University Library (UB) of the Leiden University have jointly realised the worldwide online availability of PhD dissertations and the delivery of printed copies by Printing on Demand.

How to print your dissertation by Printing On Demand (POD)

‘Printing on demand’, or POD in short, is a term used for making printed copies of a book only if there is a demand. With new printing techniques this has become economically viable for single copies, so stock is no longer needed. This also implies that you can let us manufacture just as many copies as you actually need for the examination ceremony and that you can always order later on a single-copy basis!

Bookshops and individuals can order all dissertations worldwide. Apart from the availability through the LUP website, our titles are also known on international sites. The dissertations are thus on sale via BookSurge.com, Booksinprint.com, Alibris.com, Globalbooksinprint.com and other international, affiliated sites (see below). From the nearest facility in the Netherlands, USA, UK or Australia – the one nearest to you – the copy will be manufactured and distributed. All print facilities use the same equipment, ink and paper, so that your title will have the same quality wherever it is printed.

What are the conditions?

Conditions POD:

If you let LUP manufacture your dissertation and if you like to get your printed dissertation available via POD, the following conditions apply:
  • First of all digital availability is required (see above).
  • Delivery of the dissertation in PDF format. This PDF file should adhere to certain conditions:

    • Conditions concerning the layout: LUP will provide the book cover. To this end we have developed two standard covers; (e.g. the image on top of this page).
    • Technical conditions: please contact our office.

  • AUP will need agreement with you on an author contract. A model for this type of contract can be obtained at proefschriften@aup.nl.

General:
As you will understand the rights of the used content must be yours. If you use content of a third party, a the rights must be handled appropriately.

Cost indication
If you choose to let LUP publish your dissertation, AUP will charge you the costs for the copies you require yourself. The table below gives you an indication of the costs involved, and in which the following is implied:
  • You deliver the PDF file yourself;

  • Black and white, 16x24 cm, cover in colour.

  • Pricing in EUR, 6% VAT included

  • Lists of principal points (Dutch: ‘stellingen’) and invitations not included

LUP can also service the layout, publication in colour is possible and, of course, we can take care of the lists of principal points and invitations. For an offer please contact proefschriften@lup.nl mentioning:

  • The number of characters in your dissertation (e.g. in MS-Word via menu “Extra”, item “Word count…”)
  • The number of photographic images;
  • The number of other images such as drawings and graphs;
  • The number of tables;
    Instead you can of course send us your digital manuscript by e-mail .
  • The amount of copies you require yourself;
  • Whether you need lists of principal points and invitations, and if so, in which amounts.

Planning
Hand over the PDF at least 5 weeks before the dissertations need to be handed over to the pedel (so this implies about nine weeks before the ceremony). AUP is not liable for not delivering a correct PDF file. Please take time into account to make a PDF. If you choose to let LUP handle the making of a PDF file, LUP will need time to transform your manuscript and other source content material to a PDF file. This time required depends on the character of the manuscript and source content material. Even in the most optimal situation LUP will need at least two weeks. We therefore stress you to notify proefschriften@lup.nl in plenty of time, ideally at the last three months before the examination ceremony, giving us the chance to organize an interview with you to determine your particular requirements.
